Anita Ruth Hawthorne Baldwin, 72 of Union Grove, North Carolina died Saturday, March 28, 2020 at the Gordon Hospice House of complications related to her battle with cancer.
She was born in McCook, Nebraska on March 13, 1948 to the late Glenn Hawthorne and Ruth Turner Hawthorne. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Steven J. Baldwin, a son, Ethan Noel O’Neal and a brother, Richard Hawthorne.
Anita graduated from Booker High School in Booker, Texas and from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas with a degree in Elementary Education. In 2012 she retired from Union Grove Elementary School. Anita was a member of Union Grove UMC where she was very involved. Most people would remember her as a devout Christian woman, the church organist for more than 20 years or as the high soprano in the choir. She was also a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Chicks with Sticks Knitting Group, The Methodist Women, Prayer Warriors and Gab-N'-Gobble. Over the years, she also helped with the handbell choir, youth group, art programs and the community/veteran market.
Those left to cherish her memory are a son, Seth O’Neal (Mikala) of Concord, 2 grandchildren, Garrett Cole Thomas and Sophia Ann Wellons, a step-son, Michael Baldwin (Denise) of North Wilkesboro, step-grandchildren, Wesley Baldwin, Chelsey Baldwin, Lindsey Baldwin, Kylie Baldwin, step-great grandchildren, Rylan Shumate, Avaline Auger, Julian Auger, 1 brother, David Hawthorne (Melanie), 3 sisters, Joy Kirk (Keith), Mary Foster (Larry), Becky King (Lamoine), many cousins, nieces, nephews and a special family member/caregiver, Amanda Wyatt.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2021, at 11:00 am at Union Grove UMC with burial following. The family will visit with friends and family from 12:00 to 1:00 following the burial.
